Chen-Yuan Chiang: Changing the landscape for TB and lung health
“The Union is a pathfinder. What’s important about our projects is not their size, but how they show the way forward,” says Dr Chen-Yuan Chiang, a tuberculosis expert and Director of the Department of Lung Health and Non-Communicable Diseases. Over the past decade, he has played a central role in several such path-finding initiatives — from the groundbreaking FIDELIS project, to the World Bank-funded Comprehensive Approach to Lung Health, ADF asthma pilot projects, Global Asthma Network, and the current campaign to improve the treatment for multidrug-resistant TB. Early-bird registration for Barcelona closes on 30 July

17th Latin America Region conference to be held next month in Peru
The Union’s Latin America Region members, supported by The Union Office in Peru, will hold their 17th region conference on Friday, 22 August from 08:00 to 019:00, at the Hotel Las Dunas in Ica, Peru. With close to 75% of the expected patients now enrolled in the STREAM clinical trial of a shortened MDR-TB regimen, investigators and partners working on the trial met in Johannesburg, South Africa on 8-9 July to discuss progress and next steps. Read more…

Impact of SORT-IT courses discussed in three journal articles

The impact of the Structured Operational Research and Training Initiative (SORT IT) was the subject of three publications in peer-reviewed journals in June. The articles discussed early indications of the long-term impact of operational research training in terms of the participants’ continuing research and the influence of their research on policy and practice.
